From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

Huntington Beach police were looking for two bandits who robbed and briefly kidnaped a pair of theater employees Sunday night while they were making a night deposit at a local bank.

The two victims were released by the bandits after about 10 minutes, said Huntington Beach Police Lt. Jeff Cope. The robbers stole a car belonging to one of the theater employees and dropped them off during a getaway on the San Diego Freeway.

Employees Raymond Mealey, 30, of San Dimas, and Edgar Toh, 18, of Huntington Beach, left the Edwards Cinema at Warner Avenue and Beach Boulevard about 11:30 p.m. to drop off the night’s receipts, Cope said. After stopping at a nearby bank, Mealey and Toh were approached by two men dressed in black. One of them carried a 9-millimeter handgun.

The two bandits then forced the employees into their 1987 beige Toyota Camry and ordered them to drive north to the San Diego Freeway.

The employees were released about 10 minutes later after the gunmen pulled the car over to the shoulder of the freeway, Cope said.

They fled with about $936, the car and personal belongings they took from the employees.
