NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Pirates Sweep Phillies, Lead Mets by 1 1/2 Games

Randy Tomlin came within one out of a shutout in his major league debut, Bobby Bonilla had a career-high five hits and Barry Bonds drove in five runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-1, en route to a sweep of Monday’s twi-night doubleheader in Philadelphia.

The Pirates won the second game, 4-3, tying the score on Mike LaValliere’s three-run home run in the sixth inning and winning it on Sid Bream’s run-scoring double in the 10th.

The sweep combined with the New York Mets’ 5-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals gave the Pirates a 1 1/2-game lead over the Mets in the National League East. The victory in the second game went to Bill Landrum (4-2), the last of five Pittsburgh pitchers.

Bonilla singled with one out in the 10th against Roger McDowell (3-6) and took second on a single by R.J. Reynolds. Bream then doubled to left, scoring Bonilla. Reynolds also tried to score, but was out at the plate.

In the first game, Tomlin had a two-hit shutout with two out in the ninth when singles by Von Hayes, Dale Murphy and Carmelo Martinez produced Philadelphia’s only run.

Bonds had two singles, a three-run homer and drove in a fifth run with a sacrifice fly. Bonilla, who was five for five, had a run-scoring single in the Pirates’ two-run first inning and a run-scoring triple in the ninth while and Gary Redus homered and doubled.

Houston 4, San Francisco 1--Bill Gullickson pitched his first complete game in almost three years and Bill Doran hit a two-run homer to lead the Astros past the Giants in Houston.

It was Houston’s fifth consecutive victory and dropped the second-place Giants five games behind idle Cincinnati in the West.

St. Louis 5, New York 1--Joe Magrane gave up five hits in 7 2/3 innings and Jose Oquendo hit a two-run double in a five-run second inning for the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Rex Hudler, a .220 hitter filling in for injured left fielder Vince Coleman, had a single, double and triple for the Cardinals, who have won 13 of their last 19 games and four of five under Manager Joe Torre.
