One woman died today when a Japanese yacht racing in the Kenwood Cup capsized off the coast of Molokai.

The remaining 13 members of the all-female crew either swam to shore or were picked up by other boats shortly after the boat hit an underwater reef and capsized off Cape Halawa, Coast Guard spokesman Dennis Hubbard said.

The dead woman is a Japanese national, said Dr. Marion Hanlon, acting administrator at Maui Memorial Hospital. She was not identified.

The woman was found unconscious in the yacht An by a Coast Guard search team and was brought to shore on Molokai, then airlifted to Maui Memorial.

The boat was taking part in a race between Honolulu and Molokai, one of a series of races making up the Kenwood Cup competition, race organizers said.
