Three teen-age girls who became lost hiking during a church outing in the rugged Angeles National Forest were rescued by authorities at daybreak Tuesday, unharmed but shaken by their night under lightning- and thunder-filled skies.

Sheriff’s officials said the girls--ages 13, 14 and 15--heard a helicopter at daybreak and hiked to a clearing. The search team found the girls at 7:15 a.m. near Inspiration Point, about half a mile from Angeles Crest Highway.

They were rain-soaked, mud-caked and crying on a clearing in the Big Pines area of the forest, where terrain is considered among the most rugged on the West Coast, said Sgt. Gordon Carn, coordinator of rescue team that spotted the hikers.
