Two people with interests in housing issues decided this week to run for the Santa Paula City Council.

Santa Paula Planning Commission Chairman Wayne Johnson filed documents Wednesday and community worker Jesse Ornelas filed papers on Tuesday, City Clerk Stacey MacDonald said.

Johnson, 50, has been a sales representative for the Automobile Club of Southern California for 28 years. He has served on the Planning Commission five years. Johnson has also worked on the city’s rent-control board and a committee on housing.

Ornelas, 39, has worked for 12 years with the Cabrillo Economic Development Corp., a nonprofit development firm that has built medium- and low-income housing. He unsuccessfully ran for City Council in 1982.

The two join incumbent Councilman John Melton, who last week filed papers to seek reelection. Melton, 60, a retired Southern California Edison manager, has served four terms on the council since 1974.

Two other City Council members, Kay Wilson and Carl Barringer, have decided not to seek reelection. The filing period ends Aug. 15.
