ORANGE : CHOC Heliport Gets Initial Approval

Share

Children’s Hospital of Orange County has received initial approval to install a helicopter landing port atop a seven-story hospital now under construction.

The Planning Commission granted a conditional-use permit that now will go before the City Council for final approval.

The heliport’s flight path will be over the Garden Grove Freeway, avoiding nearby residential areas.

CHOC estimates a maximum of 12 emergency medical flights per month. Other hospitals, such as the UCI Medical Center, now have three to eight flights monthly.

The heliport will be used only for hospital emergencies, and the helicopter will not be fueled or permanently stationed at CHOC.

Hospital officials say helicopter noise is 10% quieter than a passing ambulance would be.
