TUSTIN : City OKs Design for Civic Center Face Lift

Share

The design for an $8.5-million remodeling of the Civic Center was approved this week by city officials.

Tustin’s rapid growth has overburdened the facility. The Civic Center was built in 1975 when the population was 26,000 and the city employed fewer than 100 people. Today the population is 50,000, and more than 300 people work for the city.

The redesign project includes adding a second story to the Police Department and City Hall--doubling the space of those buildings--as well as putting up a 34,000-square-foot parking structure.

The redesigned buildings will be “Santa Barbara” style with stucco walls, atriums, multipaned windows and exterior columns. The color scheme will be off-white, sandstone, terra-cotta, blue-green and teal.

During the remodeling, city staff will move into offices elsewhere in the city, and Police Department employees will move into City Hall. When the police move back into their remodeled quarters, work will begin on the rest of the Civic Center.

The project could begin as early as January and be completed by summer of 1992, city officials said.
