Trash Rates to Rise in Redondo
Most Redondo Beach residents will see their trash collection rates climb 79 cents a month under a rate increase approved this week by the City Council.
The increase, retroactive to July 1, boosts monthly rates for homes on lots containing three units or less to $10.50 from the previous $9.71. Since 14,430 homes will be affected, total collection fees will rise $11,400 a month.
City officials cite several reasons for the rate increase, which was granted to Western Waste Industries, the contract hauler handling most of the city’s residential trash. Among them are increased landfill fees and new costs associated with expansion of the city’s curb-side recycling program.
The recycling program, which currently covers newspaper, aluminum, glass and clear plastic bottles, is being broadened to include “mixed paper” such as junk mail, magazines, telephone books and stationery.
