UCSD Names Coaches in 3 Sports

UC San Diego has named three new coaches for the 1990-91 school year.

Douglas Boyd will coach the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, Melissa Jarrell women’s softball and Alison Reid men’s and women’s fencing.

Boyd, an assistant at Indiana since 1988, is still a competitive sprint specialist who was a three-time All-American swimmer at Indiana and is a potential Olympic team member in 1992. He replaces Bill Morgan, who resigned after 13 years. Morgan will remain at UCSD as director of the aquatics program.

Jarrell, a softball assistant at Trenton (N.J.) State since 1987, replaces Sal Coats, who was interim coach during the 1990 season. Reid, a fencing assistant at Stanford since 1988, takes over for Lynne Antonelli, who resigned after nine seasons. Antonelli will remain at the school as a physical education instructor.

Palomar College has named Joe McEveety its swimming and water polo coach.

SURFING

Six locals surfers advanced to the fourth round of the Laguna Sportswear surfing competition at Salt Creek Beach in Laguna Niguel.

David Eggers of San Diego, Larry Keast of Vista, Rick Irons of Ocean Beach, Chuy Reyna of Oceanside, Taylor Knox of Carlsbad and Chris Menzie of San Diego moved on in the tournament, which continues through Sunday.
