Jockeys Angel Cordero, Karen Rogers, Herb McCauley and Jorge Chavez were involved in a four-horse spill in Saratoga’s second race Thursday.

None of the riders were seriously injured, although McCauley and Chavez were taken to Saratoga Hospital. Both were released a short time later when X-rays proved negative.

Chavez complained of upper body discomfort and McCauley had a bruise of the pelvis, but neither had any broken bones, according to hospital spokeswoman Helen Edelman.

Rogers and Cordero escaped serious injury, though Cordero had a bruise on his right thigh and did not ride in the third race as scheduled.

Rogers’ mount, Dom Luck, fell while contending for the lead. Cordero’s horse, Lost Mountain, was unable to avoid the fallen horse and also went down.

Aye Calypso, McCauley’s mount, and Global, with Chavez aboard, also fell attempting to avoid Rogers and Cordero.

Global broke his left cannon bone and was destroyed, said chief examining veterinarian Ted Hill. Aye Calapso came up lame in the left front, but a determination has not been on the seriousness of the injury, Hill said. The other two horses, Lost Mountain and Dom Luck, were not injured.
