ALBUM REVIEWS : **** JACK DeJOHNETTE “Parallel Realities” MCA
- Share via
When intelligent, sensitive, forward-looking musicians like drummer Jack DeJohnette, guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Herbie Hancock gather on acoustic and electronic instruments, we expect a lot, and, happily, here we get it. The many moods heard on this release range from the sultry swinging bluesiness of “Indigo Landscapes” and the chunky, move-your-tail feel of “Nine Over Reggae” to the quiet sensuality of “Exotic Isles,” which cruises along like a yacht on smooth seas, and the crackle of “Dancing,” where ting-a-ting cymbal sparks from the leader underpin stirring solos from Metheny and Hancock. The title track is a 10-minute trek through the contemporary realm, starting with detached interaction from all three--now you hear me, now you don’t--that leads to zestful Hancock statements (he improvises on acoustic piano throughout) and thick guitar synth clouds from Metheny to, ultimately, a somber repose that ties a fitting knot on things.
