President Bush Sends Troops to Saudi Arabia

It was not unexpected to encounter the viewpoint illustrated in Tom Bethell’s column, but it is so discouraging (“Shooting Ourselves in the Foot,” Commentary, Aug. 8).

It is not as if World War II never happened. It is not as if we don’t know that the reason it happened was that everybody saw it expedient to stay out of Hitler’s way. What if he annexes Austria and Czechoslovakia? Surely he will stop there. Surely Hussein will stop with Kuwait. Today. Maybe.

And then, of course, we may get someone worse after him. Let’s count our blessings.

It is fascinating to watch the mentality of fear. To watch the denial that something can be happening that deserves response. To be so steeped in the desire to do nothing, as to blame the response as the evil. Who cares about Kuwait’s sovereignty and Saudi Arabia’s, Israel’s, Egypt’s, Turkey’s. Long live fortress America.
