How to Tour Kenai Fjords

Getting to Seward: Motorists should allow at least three hours for the 130-mile drive between Anchorage and Seward via the scenic Seward Highway. The Alaska Railroad offers daily services through Sept. 9 between Anchorage and Seward. The round-trip rail fare is $60 for adults, $30 for children 2 through 11 years. There is infrequent air service on small planes; car or rail travel is recommended.

Nature cruises: Sightseeing vessels depart Seward’s small-boat harbor at 8 a.m. daily from mid-May to mid-September on nine-hour cruises. Fares for this season range from $74 to $87 for adults; children under age 12 are charged $37. Half-day (four-hour) cruises depart daily at 8:30 a.m. Fares are $37 for adults, $12 for children. Kenai Fjords tour vessels carry from 43 to 149 passengers.

Package tours: Kenai Fjords tours are available by rail or coach from Anchorage. Costs range from $119 a person for round-trip travel on the Alaska Railroad and a four-hour Kenai Fjords cruise to $229 a person for a two-day trip that includes an eight-hour nature cruise plus overnight lodging in Seward.
