It’s been several hours since last we heard from Zsa Zsa. Now, another member of Hungarian royalty is making herself heard.

Princess Thekla von Stett-Vasary wrote the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to say that she had read “in the newspapers that the famous landmark . . . the 1923-built HOLLYWOOD sign is for sale and shall be offered through Sotheby’s London to the highest bidder.”

The princess offered to buy it for “my Caribbean island, from where the 50-feet high letters, properly illuminated, could be seen from far, becoming a landmark for all visiting tourists as well as a checkpoint for the marine (sic).”

The chamber didn’t reply immediately, prompting Von Stett-Vasary to write the chamber again, asking what had happened to her first letter.

“Haven’t you received it because of the known problems with the U.S. mail?” asked the princess, who has a post office box in Beverly Hills.

Larry Kaplan, the chamber president, thanked her for her offer but wrote:

“The Hollywood Sign is not for sale. It is a national treasure, like the Statue of Liberty.”

Now as for the Brooklyn Bridge . . .

UCLA’s fall extension catalogue offers classes titled:

* “Writing from the Inner Self,”

* “Spirit and Soul Writing: Exploring Your Deepest Self,” and

* “Empowering the Self: A Creative Writing Workshop.”

Ideal for self-starters.

Dear Michael Sands Public Relations:

That press release you sent to Only in L.A., addressed to Pat Harvey, has been forwarded to the KCAL (Channel 9) anchorwoman.

It’s a clear case of theft, as far as L.A. Police Officer Rick Loeffler is concerned. The culprits: L.A. sheriff’s deputies.

Loeffler was unhappy to hear that a monthly column covering Malibu deputies in a sheriff’s publication is titled: “To Protect and to Surf.”

“They (the deputies) stole it,” said Loeffler, pointing out that his LAPD surfing team has been using the motto for 11 years.

Loeffler admitted, though, that the deputies proved superior in the surfing portion of the recent statewide Police Olympics. While the LAPD was shut out, the sheriff’s deputies captured one first place and two third places. Those gnarly dudes.

What does this say about the state of the entertainment business? The Beverly Hills Courier newspaper published an ad that said:

“Marvin Hime and Co., Jeweler to the Stars . . . Going Out of Business.”

miscelLAny:

The world record for endurance stilt-walking is held by Joe Bowen, who wobbled 3,008 miles from L.A. to Bowen, Ky., in 1980.
