GM Seat Belt Safety Questioned: A private auto safety group asked the federal government to investigate door-mounted seat belts in General Motors cars after reports of four deaths and five injuries. The Center for Auto Safety asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to open a formal investigation, which could lead to a recall of belt systems used in 5.5 million 1987-90 model cars. The seat belts in question automatically close over front-seat occupants as they enter the vehicle, but they fail when doors pop open during an accident, according to the auto safety center.
