Santa Monica : Veterans’ Memorial Plans

Share

The Department of Cultural and Recreation Services is seeking proposals from artists to design and create a new memorial honoring the city’s veterans.

A previous memorial, dedicated by the city in 1966 and placed in the 1200 block of the pedestrian Third Street Mall, was removed in the course of recent renovation that transformed the mall into the Third Street Promenade. The memorial consisted of five bronze plaques representing each of the military branches and an eternal flame atop the structure.

Proposals for the new memorial are due by Sept. 29. In accordance with requests made by veterans’ organizations, the proposals should incorporate the five plaques and the eternal flame.

The memorial will be placed in Palisades Park between Colorado Avenue and Broadway. The city will pay up to $10,000 to cover design, construction and installation of the completed work.

More information and proposal applications may be obtained by calling the Department of Cultural and Recreation Services at 458-8350, or at City Hall, 1685 Main Street.
