Westwood : Inner-City Health Study

Share

The Health Promotion Center at the UCLA School of Public Health has received a grant of $55,000 for a national study of the health of inner-city minority residents.

The project, which will include development of a health promotion strategy, is being underwritten by the Charles A. Dana Foundation of New York City, a private philanthropic foundation interested in health and higher education.

According to UCLA representatives, the grant recognizes the work the Health Promotion Center is doing among low-income residents of eastern and central Los Angeles. A center spokesman said health promotion, including good nutrition and regular exercise, is more likely to be practiced in areas where people have higher incomes and educational backgrounds than in the inner-city, where disease prevention is needed most. The Dana grant provides for a scholarly review of the problem nationwide.

At the end of a year, results will be presented at a national conference. The conference will consider a strategy for dealing with the problem, including identifying possible sources of funding.
