Los Angeles : Preregistration for School
New students in the Los Angeles Unified School District, including kindergarten students, can preregister at most schools weekdays from Aug. 24 to Sept. 10, the school district has announced. The fall term begins Sept. 11.
Schools will not be open for registration on Aug. 31 or Sept 3 because of the Labor Day weekend.
Preregistration is recommended for all new students, including those who have moved to a different school within the district, because it helps schools plan class schedules and room assignments before students arrive, district spokesman Don Coleman said.
Junior and senior high school students who preregister have a better chance of getting their preferred classes, Coleman said.
Children are eligible for kindergarten if their 5th birthday occurs on or before Dec. 2. Parents must provide proof of birth date; birth certificates, baptism certificates, passports, health office verifications or verification from the Bureau of Public Social Services are accepted.
Kindergarten children must also present a written and complete immunization record from a doctor or health department. Required shots include immunizations against polio, mumps, rubeola (10-day measles), rubella (German measles), diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough. The results of a tuberculosis skin test are also required.
Students new to the district must show that their immunizations are up to date before they can start school. They must also bring a transfer or a report card from their former school.
