A 75-year-old Huntington Beach jogger wearing radio headphones was struck and killed Thursday while crossing an intersection against a red light during early morning traffic, a police spokesman said.

The victim, identified as Michael Rolando, was hit by a Dodge van at 5:45 a.m. as he jogged across Heil Avenue along Edwards Street.

“He (had) crossed Edwards on another crosswalk against the red and a witness honked,” Huntington Beach Police Lt. Ed McErlain said, adding that the victim then turned south to cross Heil, and was hit.

“He apparently went across two streets against the red (light),” the police spokesman said, adding he did not know if Rolando, because he was wearing headphones, heard the drivers honking.

The unidentified female driver of the van was not cited, McErlain said.

“I don’t think she had any opportunity to stop or honk,” he added.
