COUNTYWIDE : Wheelchair Access Agreed to by OCTD

The Orange County Transit District will provide wheelchair access by next spring on all of its commuter-express buses running between Orange County and downtown Los Angeles under terms of a lawsuit settlement reached Thursday with the state attorney general’s office.

“We’re real pleased,” said Deputy Atty. Gen. Henry Torres Jr. “Basically, it opens downtown Los Angeles to the disabled community of Orange County.”

The suit, filed in March, 1989, in Orange County Superior Court, alleged that the transit district violated state laws requiring that public transportation service be accessible to the disabled on the express lines serving Los Angeles.

The district had contended that because the service was provided under contract by Greyhound Lines Inc., the law didn’t apply. But on July 13, Orange County Superior Court Judge Eileen C. Moore issued a tentative ruling, holding the district in violation of the state law.

Under the settlement reached Thursday, the Orange County Transit District will provide buses that can accommodate wheelchairs on all 12 express runs from Huntington Beach and Fullerton to Los Angeles by April 1, 1991, Torres said.
