Corey Carrier: The Kid’s in ‘Heaven’

Share

Corey Carrier is in a unique position for an actor: He’s not allowed to see a lot of the movies he’s been in.

He’d probably get bored sitting through “Men Don’t Leave,” in which he plays the brat who helps Jessica Lange’s son steal VCRs. And he’s still a little young to see more than a couple of scenes of “The Witches of Eastwick.” When his family got “Eastwick” on video, he says, “we fast-forwarded to my part and I watched.”

But time is on Corey’s side. He’s got a birthday coming up on Monday, and his newest movie, “My Blue Heaven,” (which opened yesterday ) is rated PG-13. Which means that with parental

accompaniment, he could actually see it in a theater.

“My Blue Heaven,” which Corey describes as “a comedy drama, I guess,” stars Steve Martin, Rick Moranis and Joan Cusack. According to Corey, it’s a pretty good movie, too. “On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give it about a 7,” he says. “Maybe an 8.”

Corey himself is a nine--nine years old going on 10, that is. Unlike the average soon-to-be-fifth-grader, he’s got five motion pictures (including the upcoming “After Dark, My Sweet”) and four TV roles under his belt. But like most kids his age, he loves comic books and the Super Mario Brothers, has a lot to say about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (“They’re just awesome! They fight everybody bad and save the world and all that junk”) and not a lot to say about girls (“I’ll stick to Nintendo and skateboarding”).

Corey got his show-business start at an early age. “I got into talent shows when I was about 2 1/2,” he remembers. In his act, he’d ask the audience, “What’s the difference between me and Tom Selleck?” then turn around and put on a fake mustache. In retrospect, he says, “I should’ve unbuttoned one of the buttons and put a wig down my shirt.”

The kid’s a born comedian.
