After a dozen seasons and five championships with the Lakers, Michael Cooper severed his ties to the NBA by clearing the waiver list unclaimed.

That leaves the Cooper, 34, free to accept a three-year, $5-million offer from Il Messaggero Roma of the Italian League. The Lakers were unwilling to match the offer.

Cooper’s agent asked all NBA clubs to pass up the chance to claim him, saying Cooper’s contract terms would be prohibitive.
