Saxophonist Murray’s freewheeling reputation has obscured his strong traditionalist bent but it’s the latter element that dominates this adequate--but unexceptional--1986 live recording. Sounding somewhat reined in by pianist John Hicks and bassist Ray Drummond, Murray is mellifluous as his bass clarinet snakes through “Quads,” but then his tenor breaks out on “Red Car,” a raucous, strutting blues. Recording quality is not the best--drummer Ralph Peterson Jr., is muffled, and on “Morning Song” there’s extraneous noise--probably Hicks singing the notes as he develops his solo.
