If the words “community breakfast” conjure up images of hot cakes and sausage links at the local Moose Lodge, it’s time to rethink.

Consider, for example, Brunch on the Boulevard, to be held Saturday as part of the daylong Old Pasadena Summer Festival. On the menu are crepes filled with ricotta, granola and fruit, topped with three sauces and accompanied by O’Brien potatoes, Champagne, juice and coffee.

The breakfast, to be dished out from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. by French-trained cook Henry Mesclon, executive chef of the Ritz Grill, is only one of the events planned for the festival, a benefit for the American Cancer Society and The Sycamores, an Altadena home for abandoned and abused boys.

Also scheduled is an 8 a.m. “Un-Run,” in which people will raise money for the charities based on the number of kilometers they do not run; an art festival; a talent show; carnival rides; a baby photo contest; music by local bands, and food booths featuring the culinary delights of 20 Old Pasadena restaurateurs.

At 8 p.m., there will be dancing on the boulevard to the big band sounds of the Ashley Williams Orchestra and the ‘50s and ‘60s rock music of Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries.

The organizers of the Old Pasadena Summer Festival hope it will become an annual charity fund-raiser.

Admission is free, but there are charges for the dance ($8 in advance and $10 at the gate), the brunch, ($7 in advance and $8.50 at the gate), and other food booth offerings.

Advance tickets can be purchased from the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and in many Old Pasadena shops.

The festivities will begin at 8 a.m. and run through midnight on a four-block section of Colorado Boulevard that will be blocked off between Raymond and Pasadena avenues in Old Pasadena.
