I tend to agree with Robert Hilburn that George Strait is a rather
smooth, easygoing performer with an amicable style. But that’s one of the “Strait traits” that makes him the country superstar that he is. In these days of shock performances by comedians and rap groups, Strait’s style is like a cool drink of spring water on a hot L.A. day.
I disagree with Hilburn’s suggestion that country music is in need of a jump-start.
The battery of country music performers has never had more output. New acts such as Clint Black, k.d. lang, Travis Tritt and the Kentucky Headhunters will keep country fresh and alive for a long time to come, and there are more in the wings.
