The United Auto Workers will announce Aug. 28 which of the nation’s Big Three auto makers it will choose as its strike target, a union spokeswoman said today.

The UAW’s International Executive Board will meet Aug. 27 to review the bargaining that began with General Motors, Ford and Chrysler in late July to replace existing agreements covering over 500,000 auto workers that expire Sept. 14.

Traditionally, the UAW selects one of the Big Three auto makers where it concentrates its efforts, hoping the other two will sign a similar, or “pattern,” agreement.

The union is widely expected to select industry giant GM as its target because that’s where the issue of job security seems to be most seriously challenged, experts say.
