PLATFORM : How Can It Hurt?

My son is in the 5th grade and he’s been in year-round since preschool. I don’t understand why people fight it.

How can it hurt children to know where they will be and what they will be doing all year? The structure is good for them. It’s a problem to have two months off. This city doesn’t have enough programs and places for all those children being off that long. Kids can get into trouble.

Another thing is we have a lot of kids, especially in this area, who aren’t English-speaking. How can someone say that it’s not going to hurt them to be away from that English exposure for two months?

I’ll grant that (the heat) is a problem. But people should be arguing with the school board to get air conditioning instead of fighting to interrupt the kids’ education. Our school has air (conditioning). Before that, my son was getting bloody noses. It took a while to get, but we kept fighting.
