OXNARD : Students Hired to Paint Over Graffiti

Share

A squad of six high school students will use 250 gallons of recycled beige paint to cover graffiti on Oxnard’s walls and buildings.

The youths, hired by the Job Training Policy Council to work through Sept. 7, supplement the graffiti control efforts of the Public Works and Parks and Recreation departments.

Community Services Officer Manny Vega said his research indicates that graffiti in Oxnard are “worse than in any other city in the county.”

The students work 35 hours a week for $4.25 an hour using paint donated by MSE Environmental in Camarillo.

“It’s amazing how much progress they’ve made so far” on graffiti that are in virtually every part of the city, said Community Services Director Jim Faulconer. “I think it’s a real valuable addition to the city’s regular graffiti abatement efforts.”

Team members work in both public and private areas.

Neighborhood councils and individuals advise the city on areas that need the most attention, and the city asks permission before starting work on private property, Vega said.
