Presley’s Place

In response to the comments about Elvis Presley by Vernon Reid (of Living Colour) in the Aug. 12 Pop Eye column:
Elvis has been called a white who sang black music credibly and a singer who made black music acceptable to whites. This kind of thinking completely overlooks what Elvis did, which was to absorb black music and transform it into something that had not been heard before.
Elvis made the first attempts to cross many barriers, both white and black, fusing gospel, blues, pop and country into a new style of American music.
