Quarterback Play, Lack of Injuries Highlight UCLA Game Scrimmage

UCLA Coach Terry Donahue said there were more positive than negative aspects of a 76-play, game-type scrimmage Saturday at the Rose Bowl.

“I’m also happy that there were no major injuries,” Donahue said. “We’ve got a lot of players nicked up.”

Quarterbacks Jim Bonds and Tommy Maddox got most of the work in the scrimmage as Donahue constantly alternated his players.

Flanker Reggie Moore made a diving catch of a 15-yard pass from Maddox for one touchdown.

Bonds, who was named the No. 1 quarterback last week, prompting Bret Johnson, last season’s starter, to leave school, had scoring throws of 16 and seven yards, respectively, to tight end Randy Austin and split end Brian Allen.

Maddox completed nine of 15 passes for 119 yards and one interception, and Bonds was nine of 14 for 116 yards. Tailback Kevin Williams was the leading rusher with 56 yards in nine carries, and fullback Maury Toy had the best average, 10.7 yards in three carries.

Donahue said he was also pleased with the showing of redshirt freshman Ricky Davis, who had a 6.1-yard average in seven carries.

Several players missed the scrimmage because of assorted injuries: tailback Brian Brown, quarterback Bert Emanuel, cornerback Robert Gamble, nose guards Siitupe Tuala and Garrett Greedy, linebackers Meech Shaw and Randy Cole, and defensive end Mike Chalenski, a transfer from Pittsburgh.

Kevin Williams suffered a sprained ankle in the scrimmage, and free safety Eric Turner sprained a toe.
