P.M. BRIEFING : Domino’s Too Fast for Calif. City
The City Council today unanimously struck down a proposal to build a Domino’s Pizza shop in a busy part of town after the company refused to waive its guarantee of a 30-minute-or-less delivery.
City officials asked the pizza company to suspend its nationwide policy at the proposed site after residents said speedy deliveries might lead to auto accidents. Domino’s promises $3 off on any order not delivered in half an hour.
“If it comes down to pizza or safety, we’re going to go on the side of safety,” said Councilman Scott Talan, who led the fight against the pizza policy. He said the quick-delivery rule puts pressure on young drivers, who may speed to fill an order.
The proposed site for the pizzeria was on a busy intersection near an elementary school, a church and a home for senior citizens.
