The replacement of one of the three cables carrying electricity under San Diego Bay to Coronado Island was scheduled to be completed by noon today. San Diego Gas & Electric altered its repair procedure to avoid delaying Navy ships departing for the Middle East.

Utility repair crews began replacing the broken cable Monday afternoon.

The standard repair procedure would interrupt the shipping lane for up to 12 hours while the damaged section of cable is raised to the surface and repaired, SDG&E; spokesman John Britton said.

SDG&E; does not want to interfere with any Navy movements out of port, so the company’s repair barges raised the broken cable on either side of the shipping lane and spliced in a new 1,000-foot segment to each end, Britton said.

Britton said Coronado had not lost any electricity since the cable broke Wednesday because the other two cables were able to make up the difference.
