A private contractor drilling a large hole with an auger damaged four telephone cables this morning, cutting off service to as many as 4,600 customers in Mission Viejo and El Toro, a PacBell spokeswoman said.
The service interruption, which occurred at 10 a.m., will last through noon Wednesday, phone company spokeswoman Linda Bonniksen said.
Phone company crews were expected to be working throughout the day and night trying to splice the 4,600 pairs of telephone wires that were ripped by the large drill bit.
“Cable cuts are bad news,” Bonniksen said. “They are so hard to repair.”
