County Employees Win Fight for Free Parking
The Los Angles County Board of Supervisors, responding to an appeal by the largest union of county employees, rejected a plan Tuesday that would have ended free downtown parking for the members of other unions.
The parking proposal was drafted in order to meet a South Coast Air Quality Management District regulation designed to reduce smog and traffic.
But representatives of the Service Employees International Union, Local 660, the county’s largest union, argued that the county’s plan would set a bad precedent and ultimately cost its members $600 to $1,700 a year to pay for replacement parking.
After an hour of debate on the volatile issue, the supervisors ordered Chief Administrative Officer Richard Dixon to re-draft an agreement on the plan with the Coalition of County Unions to include more alternatives, incentives and lower costs for employees.
