UCLA Police to Join LAPD on Weekend Patrols

Share

Members of the UCLA police force will join the Los Angeles Police Department in patrolling adjoining Westwood Village during weekend street closures, it was announced Thursday.

The UCLA officers will patrol streets in the village on Friday and Saturday nights between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m., supplementing foot patrols by Los Angeles police officers already assigned to the area, according to a joint statement released by City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky and UCLA Chancellor Charles Young.

Yaroslavsky asked UCLA to help patrol the area after he announced last week the closures of some of Westwood’s busiest streets on the weekends. That plan will be continued this weekend and is expected to remain in effect at least over the next month. The street closures were designed to cut down on traffic and keep crime under control. However, some business owners have complained that the reduced traffic has also reduced sales.
