THE SIDELINES : Elmore on List for Maryland AD
Former Maryland standout center Len Elmore, now a CBS-TV sports commentator, is among at least five finalists being considered for the athletic director’s position at the University of Maryland, the Washington Post reported today.
Elmore, a record-setting rebounder at Maryland and a Harvard Law School graduate, was quoted by the Post as saying he was “flattered” to be a finalist but added he did not apply for the position and has not been told by school officials that he was on a short list of candidates.
The Post report, citing unnamed sources, said the other candidates included four current athletic directors--Cory Johnson of Long Beach State, Dave Hart of East Carolina, Charles Harris of Arizona State and Oval Jaynes of Colorado State.
Interviews of prospective successors to Lew Perkins, who left the troubled Terrapin sports program for the comparable job at the University of Connecticut, could begin as soon as Tuesday, the Post said.
