Quayle Overboard!: Marilyn Quayle fell into the Colorado River during a white-water rafting expedition through the Grand Canyon but escaped injury, Chuck Lundy, spokesman for Grand Canyon National Park, said in Grand Canyon, Ariz., Wednesday. The wife of Vice President Dan Quayle was tossed into the water over the weekend when her raft hit some rapids. She was pulled back on board by someone on her raft, Lundy said. She was wearing a life jacket.

No Harm, No Foul: A lawsuit accusing hotel queen Leona Helmsley of taking millions of dollars from her husband has been thrown out of a New York court. A judge ruled Wednesday that former Helmsley real estate executive William R. Miller could not sue because he was an “indirect secondary victim of these alleged frauds.” Miller said Leona Helmsley tried to take advantage of Helmsley’s “declining mental facilities.” Leona Helmsley, 70, is appealing a federal tax fraud conviction. Harry Helmsley was found mentally unfit to stand trial.

Panda Parlor: Beijing’s zoo moved its pandas, the mascots of the upcoming Asian Games, into luxurious living spaces Thursday from their old, cramped quarters. Ling Ling, Liang Liang and War War lolled in jungle foliage in their air-conditioned cages--but visitors will have to make do with a small ceiling fan. The Asian Games begin in three weeks.

Helping the Opponent: A constituent of Rep. Buddy Darden (D-Ga.)--who also happens to be running against the congressman--is asking Darden to help him stay in the race if his Army reserve unit is called up for Persian Gulf duty. Al Beverly wrote Darden this week, asking him to sponsor an amendment to a federal law that would clarify the standing of reservists. The law prohibits most federal employees--possibly including reservists on active duty--from taking an active role in political campaigns. Darden’s spokesman said the request “will be treated just like any other.”
