About 300,000 people are expected to attend the second annual Fiesta de Independencia here Sept. 14-16.

The event is designed to give local residents the opportunity to celebrate the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Puerto Rico.

It also gives merchants in the downtown area, the site of the festival, an opportunity to bring attention to their area, said Manuel Pena, president of the Downtown Santa Ana Business Assn.

“We want to let people know that historic, downtown Santa Ana is here and that it’s a good place to come and shop,” Pena said. “We have just as much to offer as MainPlace or South Coast Plaza and we want to let people know what they’re missing. This area is what most people remember as a downtown shopping experience with ice cream parlors, clothing stores, jewelry stores, restaurants and even Woolworth.”

Last year, approximately 230,000 people attended the fiesta, which will be held on Fourth Street and stretch seven blocks from Ross to French streets. There will be more than 100 booths with food, arts and crafts, and carnival rides and music.
