JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT : AIRPORT INTERIOR : Parking

Parking garages flanking south and north ends of main terminal building are linked to both ends of terminal. Fees are $1 per hour, $14 per day, $7 for third day and each following day. Automated, time-coded advance payment is available in terminal.

Rentals

Avis, Budget, Dollar, General, Hertz and National car rentals are located on lower level (arrivals) near elevators. Alamo, Airways, and Thrifty are off-site.

Clubs

American Airlines and America West have private club lounges on mezzanine level for club members only. Membership is obtained in advance from each airline; fees vary.

Ticketing

Airline counters at front of departure level in both south and north sections of terminal. From south to north: Northwest, TWA, America West, United, USAir, American, Midway, Delta, Continental, Alaska.

Restaurants

Host International restaurant and a food court that includes Pizza Hut, TCBY Yogurt and a fresh bakery share center departure level. Host snack bars are at front of terminal opposite each stairway to baggage claim. There are McDonald’s restaurants facing airline gates in both north and south concourses. Creative Croissants is opposite Gate 7. Host cocktail bars face Gates 5, 11.

Baggage

Passengers collect luggage from four carousels on lower level, accessible by stairs, elevators and escalators. Exit doors open out to lower roadway for curbside pickup. Luggage cart rentals for $1.50, with a 25-cent refund upon return.

Gates

Telescoping loading bridges connect 14 gates to individual aircraft. Gates are assigned to specific airlines, but sometimes they will be shared. Mid-terminal gates can accommodate aircraft as large as the B-767. Waiting areas are separated by short, 2-foot-high dividers. Doors at ends of north and south concourses serve small commuter carriers.

Security

Passengers and carry-on luggage pass through security checkpoints equipped with metal detectors and X-ray machines. Video cameras throughout terminal. Multi-lens cameras hang from ceiling in baggage claim area. Closed-circuit TVs also scan parking garages and aircraft apron. Airport employees have an ATM-type ID card read by electronic locks tied into a computer.

Vendors

Looking west toward runways, the terminal is split into two sections: A (north half) and B (south half). Paradies Newsstand/Gifts has shops near south front entrance on departure level and facing Gate 6 on south concourse. In flip-flopped positions, MBE Newsstand/Gifts shops are situated near north front entrance and facing Gate 10 on north concourse. See’s Candies is near top of north stairway, north of elevators.

Monorail

McDonnell Douglas Realty will pay for a quarter-mile, $4-million monorail linking the Thomas F. Riley Terminal and a twin-tower office complex to be built across MacArthur Boulevard. However, permit and engineering delays have pushed installation back until sometime next year, with work crews retrofitting the system to airport structures at night to avoid blocking airport traffic.

John Wayne Statue

The 9-foot statue of the famous actor was moved from its previous spot in front of the Edward (Eddie) J. Martin Terminal to its new location inside a rotated square at the Thomas F. Riley Terminal.

Arrivals, Lower Level

Passengers coming off aircraft descend to terminal’s lower level to claim baggage, rent a car, find a cab or shuttle, obtain hotel information and arrange curbside baggage pickup. Visitors greeting arriving passengers use lower roadway to reach garage areas on this level. System is similar to L.A. International Airport.

Departures, Upper Level

Airline passengers check in either at curb, ticket counters or at gates on second or upper level. Most services are located here. Security checkpoint separates ticketing side from aircraft gate concourse. Access to departure floor from upper roadway, which has entrances to nearby parking garages on same level. Two parking garages have direct passageways into terminal.

Baggage

Skycaps place departing passengers’ curbside baggage aboard automatic baggage conveyors, which lead directly to the baggage handling area. Source: John Wayne Airport
