Man Sent to Prison for Try on Wife’s Life
A Glendale man who said he tried to kill himself and his wife because they were going to be evicted from their home has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempted murder.
Pasadena Superior Court Judge George Xanthos also recommended that Arthur Cunningham, 53, receive psychiatric counseling.
Cunningham said he attacked his wife, Arjean Cunningham, 46, with a hammer while she was sleeping the morning of Dec. 21 because he had learned that the couple was going to be evicted. He then attempted to take his own life by slashing his wrists.
He pleaded guilty Aug. 7 to second-degree attempted murder and intent to inflict great bodily harm. He could have received up to 13 years in prison, Deputy Public Defender Bruce Schweiger said.
Los Angeles County marshals discovered the couple in their Maryland Avenue condominium when they arrived to serve the eviction notice later that morning, Schweiger said.
Arjean Cunningham and her sister inherited the condominium from their parents, but her sister ordered the eviction because the Cunninghams had not paid the mortgage, he said.
