SCHOOL REPORT : Bell Tolls New Year for Schools

More than 148,000 North County elementary, middle and high school students heeded the peal of the school bell earlier this week and headed back to public school classrooms. They were met there by 11,031 teachers armed with chalk, textbooks and computers.

Totals do not include the San Diego Unified School District. North County has a maze of 26 school districts -- from tiny Spencer Valley (31 students) to Poway Unified (23,321 students). Unified school districts are organized broadly and encompass kindergarten through 12th grade. Some communities maintain separate elementary and high school districts. Additionally, some districts have combined at the high school level.
