Mats Sundin, the NHL’s top draft choice in 1989 and one of the brightest stars in Swedish hockey, unexpectedly left for Quebec without notifying his Swedish club, Djurgarden.

It was not known if Sundin would sign with the Nordiques, but Djurgarden’s chairman, Ake Bergdahl, said: “We’ll try to get him disqualified from international hockey if he breaks his contract with us.”
