GOLF ROUNDUP : Sluman Takes One-Shot Lead
Jeff Sluman birdied five of the first eight holes and shot a 64 Thursday to take the first-round lead in the Hardee’s tournament at Coal Valley, Ill.
Sluman, who finished with seven birdies and one bogey on the 6,741-yard Oakwood Country Club course, was one shot ahead of Greg Twiggs and Billy Mayfair.
Mayfair was tied with Sluman at six under heading into the final hole, but he put his second shot behind the left bunker and missed a 12-foot putt for par. Twiggs’ round included five birdies.
South African Hugh Baiocchi shot a six-under-par 64 and took a one-stroke lead in the European Open at Sunningdale, England.
Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain and Welshman Ian Woosnam were tied for second.
