UCSD Loses to Navy at End in Water Polo

A four-meter penalty shot by Elton Parker with no time remaining gave Navy a 9-8 overtime victory over UC San Diego in the Triton Invitational at Canyonview Pool on Saturday.

Gary Seelhorst and Kevin Vance scored two goals apiece for the Aztecs. The score was tied at 7-7 at the end of regulation.

Vance, Mike Bennett and Jay Hagan scored twice for UCSD in the Tritons’ earlier 9-5 victory over UC Davis.

Navy and Air Force finished the first day of the round robin tournament with perfect 2-0 records. UCSD was 1-1. Claremont-Mudd and Davis were each 0-2.

The tournament continues today at 9 a.m.

SURFING

Oceanside’s Mike Lambresi and defending event champion Christian Fletcher of San Clemente were upset at the $100,000 Body Glove Surf Bout III at the lower trestles on Camp Pendleton. Fletcher lost his heat to Manhattan Beach’s Ted Robinson and Florida’s Charlie Kuhn. Lambresi lost to Fletcher and Peter Mel of Santa Cruz.

The top two finishers advanced in elimination heats. The final three rounds will be held today, with the final beginning at 12:30 p.m.

RACEWALKING

American record-holder Debbie Lawrence of Kenosha, Wis. won the Naturalsport 10K in 47:45. Lynn Weik, of Sayville, N.Y., placed second (48:05) in the field of 30 walkers. Rounding out the top five were: Victoria Herazo from Sherman Oaks (49:12), Wendy Sharp of Flourissant, Colo., (50:00) and Theresa Vail of Pine Plains, N.Y., (50:14).
