Shoemakers Spur Cartier Benefit for Young Equestrians

Share

Like the traditional “Champagne at Cartier” fall benefit in New York, the West Coast version at the boutique on Rodeo Drive has become one of the most popular events on the equestrian circuit.

Famed jockey Bill Shoemaker and his wife, Cindy (a rider herself), are honorary chairs. That’s a plus in the quest for funds for the Junior and Young Riders programs of the American Horse Shows Assn., the national equestrian federation.

AHSA president James C. Wofford and Cartier manager Maryam Saghatelian expect a sell-out for the Beverly Hills party Sept. 25. Tickets range from $1,000 a pair to $100 for individuals. It’s all to prod young equestrians into success at top-level competitions.

IN LOVE: Pasadena does love its public libraries. The California Mediterranean-style Central Library, designed by Myron Hunt in 1925, is on the National Register of Historic Places and 60% of the community has library cards.

Thus, the Pasadena Public Library Foundation, headed by Tempe Brooks, hosts a Love-Your-Library gala, black-tie and all, Sept. 21 to thank generous donors for their aid in restoring the Central Library. Dinner will be served in the Great Hall after cocktails in the courtyard.

First Lady Barbara Bush has agreed to be honorary chairman. Ann Longyear is gala chairman. More on the committee are Ray Bradbury, honorary authors and auction chair; working chair is Jean Van Tuyle. Successful with patron letters are Ernestine Avery, Harriet Fullerton, Betty Keatinge, Kay Paschall and Georgie Van de Kamp. It should be a pretty party: Mimi Howes will lend her floral talents to decor. Gloria Renwick says that Community Bank has provided $75,000 to underwrite the event.

AUTUMN MOON: Pacific Asia Museum will auction $300,000 in art objects at its 13th annual Festival of the Autumn Moon dinner-dance Oct. 6 at the museum. The honorary committee includes Peter Adams, John Crowley, Secretary of State March Fong Eu, Jess Hughston, Robert S. Maguire III, Jane F. Ullman, Andrea Van de Kamp and Audrey Webb.

PRE-GALAS: Somewhere in history, it became fashionable to host pre-benefit galas. Not the least of these are this month. Hermes will honor Los Angeles Philharmonic Ball patrons Sept. 27 at its Rodeo Drive Boutique.

That means extra-level-of-support patrons for the big ball Oct. 16 that will pay tribute to Philharmonic Executive Director Ernest Fleischmann on stage at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. It will be the Los Angeles Junior Philharmonic Committee’s third fund-raising ball. Co-chairs are Joan MacLaughlin and Susan P. Rhoades. For the pre-party, hors d’oeuvres will represent cuisine from the birthplaces of great composers--the brainstorm of Ann Ronus and Sheila Stern. . . .

Frances Franklin is gala chair with June Haver MacMurray, her good friend, co-chair. Someone at the pre-party will win the door prize, a Vacheron Constantin timepiece.

A PAIR: Not often do benefits get mother and daughter for co-chairs. The Pasadena Planned Parenthood Committee lucked out. On Saturday, Louise Lee Eldred and her daughter, Andrea Eldred Walker, co-chair “Under a Gypsy Moon” in the gardens of Molly Munger and Stephen English in Pasadena. More on the committee are Patricia Bakaly, Robin Banks, Beth Calleton, Joan Caillouette, Jan Tranquada, Annie Odell, Deven Riley, Barbara Steinwedell, Jane Winckler, Katherine Gillespie, Judy MacCready and Nicole Hampton.

TRIBUTES: In tribute to her refusal of a $72,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant in protest of anti-obscenity regulations, modern dance pioneer Bella Lewitsky will be honored by the Southern California Library for Social Studies and Research at a reception Sept. 23. . . .

The Rainbow Guild has voted to create a Jill Ireland Award to recognize those who show unusual courage in the face of catastrophic illness. Guild founder MeraLee Goldman will present a tribute to the late actress at the “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” benefit Saturday at the Beverly Hilton.
