WORLD : Mandela: Peace Talks May Fail
African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela warned today that peace talks with the government are in danger of collapse because of the government’s failure to crush five weeks of urban internecine violence.
Emerging from more than two hours of talks with President Frederik W. De Klerk on the mounting violence between rival black movements, Mandela said pressure was mounting on the ANC to arm its supporters and resume the “armed struggle” suspended last month.
Mandela’s warning came after another round of violence left 28 more people dead since Monday in black townships surrounding Johannesburg in the sixth straight week of fighting between supporters of the ANC and the rival Zulu movement Inkatha.
