Greece today ordered its two diplomats in Iraqi-occupied Kuwait to leave their embassy, saying there was no food or water and all communications had been cut, and Switzerland said it was also removing its remaining envoys.

A Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman said that because of the “seriousness of the situation and unbearable living conditions” at the embassy, the diplomats are to leave immediately for Baghdad, the Iraqi capital.

The spokesman said the Iraqi army, which surrounded the Greek Embassy on Sept. 3, had cut supplies, stopped communications and confined the diplomats to the compound.

Although the embassy is being abandoned, Greece said it considers it open and will continue to recognize the legitimate Kuwaiti government.
