SDSU Opens With Tar Heels

The San Diego State basketball team opens its season at North Carolina Nov. 24, and later plays three games in Peterson Gym before opening its Western Athletic Conference schedule with a nationally televised game at home against Brigham Young on Jan. 3.

The games in Peterson Gym are against Midwestern State (Wichita Falls, Tex.) on Dec. 6, Cal Poly Pomona Dec. 8 and Cal Irvine Dec. 15.

The Aztecs were bumped from the Sports Arena Dec. 6 and 8 because the San Diego Gulls of the International League are at home. John Wadas, SDSU associate athletic director, said those games were late additions to the Aztec schedule and by the time SDSU requested them, the dates were already taken. SDSU cannot play in the Sports Arena Dec. 15 because of the Swap Meet, which had already reserved that date.

“It’s unfortunate, but it’s nice to have a back-up,” SDSU Athletic Director Fred Miller said.

The Aztecs also travel to USC (Dec. 4) and UCLA (Dec. 29) and host the Texaco Star Classic (Dec. 21 and 22) before opening WAC play. Drexel, Arkansas State and Lamar join SDSU in this season’s Texaco Star Classic.
