Wilfredo Vazquez came on strong in the late rounds and stopped defending champion Joe Orewa in the 12th round to win the International Boxing Federation 122-pound junior championship at the Forum.
Vazquez, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, is the former World Boxing Assn. bantamweight champion.
Orewa, a Nigerian now living in Los Angeles, seemed to be in command through eight rounds. But in the 10th, Vazquez knocked down Orewa. Vazquez hurt Orewa early in the 11th, and nearly floored him midway through the round. Vazquez knocked down Orewa early in the 12th and then put him on his back.
