Hearings on Souter Begin Today
After weeks of researching the opinions of David H. Souter, the Senate today begins confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court nominee.
Souter, 51, had lunch at the White House with President Bush on Wednesday and, as is his custom, declined to take any questions.
Later, Bush made a pitch for Souter’s nomination during a speech to federal, state and local prosecutors. He called Souter a “tough, fair-minded, intellectually brilliant judge” and urged the Senate to act swiftly “so that he can take his place as the only career prosecutor on the court in time for the court’s first sitting” next month.
The confirmation hearings will be held in a cavernous room in the Hart Senate Office Building, an ultramodern chamber reserved for showy, attention-getting occasions. The hearings, which will be broadcast live today on KCET in Los Angeles, are expected to last at least through Friday.
